Accessing and interpreting reports

Updated this week

Sparx Reader provides three different downloadable reports that help you track how your classes and students are engaging with reading. These reports give you valuable insights into completion rates, reading habits, and reading test results across your school.

Student Activity Report

The Student Activity Report can be downloaded via 'Reporting' → 'Downloadable Reports' → 'Student Activity Report'.

This includes whole school homework completion and student rewards data, allowing you to easily see where intervention is required or praise is due.

The Activity Report shows detailed information about homework completion:

  • A "-" indicates weeks where students weren't set any homework

  • "Optional" appears for students set to optional-only reading for that week

  • Empty cells mean homework was set but not completed

  • Percentages show partial completion of homework tasks

Default data

  • Student data - first name, surname, class, year group and registration group, reading level, SRP earnt (all time), and hours of careful reading

  • Weekly completion -% completion for compulsory HW, SRP earnt and extra SRP on top of set HW.

  • Student HW settings - Set SRP and if HW is Optional

Optional data

  • Additional student data - PP (pupil premium), FSM (free school meals), EAL (English as an additional language), Gender

    • This data can only be included if we sync data from your MIS and your school's Wonde administrator has granted Sparx access to this data (if we've been granted access to some, but not all data, we'll include the data that we're able to)

Using filters to analyse your report

  • Most popular spreadsheet software allows you to easily filter and sort the data in your spreadsheet

  • You can use these features to help you to analyse the data in your student activity report

  • For example, in Microsoft Excel you can:

    • Use the dropdown arrows to the right of each column header to filter or sort the rows

    • Hide entire rows and/or columns that you are not interested in, in order to see a more streamlined view by right-clicking on the column letter or row number and selecting "Hide column/row"

Student Insights Report

The Student Insights Report can be downloaded via 'Reporting' → 'Downloadable Reports' → 'Student Insights Report'.

Similar to the information shown on the Insights page, this report allows you to see:

  • Students' current books and book reading ages

  • Reading speed and accuracy

  • Gold Reader status for your whole school in one place.

Optional data

  • Additional student data - PP (pupil premium), FSM (free school meals), EAL (English as an additional language), Gender

    • This data can only be included if we sync data from your MIS and your school's Wonde administrator has granted Sparx access to this data (if we've been granted access to some, but not all data, we'll include the data that we're able to).

Sparx Reading Test Report

The Sparx Reading Test Report can be downloaded via 'Reporting' → 'Downloadable Reports' -> 'Sparx Reading Test Report'.

After students complete the optional Sparx Reading Test, this report shows:

  • Reading ages generated from each test

  • Historical reading test results for all students

  • Test completion dates

Optional data

  • Additional student data - PP (pupil premium), FSM (free school meals), EAL (English as an additional language), Gender

    • This data can only be included if we sync data from your MIS and your school's Wonde administrator has granted Sparx access to this data (if we've been granted access to some, but not all data, we'll include the data that we're able to).

School Completion Rate Leaderboard

The Student Insights Report can be downloaded via 'Reporting' → 'Downloadable Reports' → 'School Completion Rate Leaderboard'.

The Homework Completion Rate Leaderboard is a weekly report allowing you to see a ranking of all Sparx Reader schools by their on-time homework completion, and how your school is doing compared to other Sparx schools.

Default data

  • School Group - The name of the MAT the school belongs to if applicable.

  • School - The School name.

  • Rank - The position in the leaderboard, based on the highest homework completion.

  • Number of Students -The total number of students in your school.

  • Number of students excluding optional only - The total number of students in your school, excluding those due optional homework - i.e. the total number of students included in the HW completion (%) measure.

  • Homework Completion (%) -The percentage of students who fully completed their homework on time, for homework that was due within the last week. This does not include any students who were set to 'Optional only' homework.

  • Average minutes of reading set (per week) - The average minutes of reading set within the report week.

  • Students with HW due (%) -The percentage of non-optional only students who had at least one homework assignment due last week.

Frequently asked questions

When are reports updated?

The School Completion Rate Leaderboard is updated very early every Monday. All other reports show real-time data, so you can download them at any time to see the current status of reading across your school.

Can I filter or sort the data on my reports?

Yes, you can filter reports and sort by using the dropdown at the top of each column. You can filter all reports by:

  • Individual classes

  • Tutor groups

  • Year groups

This helps you focus on specific groups of students and identify patterns in reading engagement.

Can I add SEND data to the reports

We don't include SEND data in any reports. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) consider such data to be 'special category data', which needs more protection than other categories of data.

Why is my school not in the School Completion Rate Leaderboard this week?

Only schools with homework due in the previous week will be included in the report.

Why is my student activity report taking a long time to download?

Adding more data categories will mean that the report takes longer to generate. The report can also take longer to generate later in the school year when there's more data to process. If you're a larger school and generate a report containing all data categories towards the end of the school year, the report could take up to 2 minutes to generate.
