Using homework insights

Find out how to identify situations where support and intervention may be needed.

Updated yesterday

The Insights page provides detailed information about your students' reading abilities, progress, and engagement with Sparx Reader. This helps you monitor student progress and identify areas where support may be needed.

What can I see on the Insights page?

Current book and book reading age

This will show the book a student is currently reading and the book reading age. This will always show the latest ebook a student has read and will change over time.

Sparx level

Sparx Levels are a measure of a student's reading ability, these range from a 1-9 scale, based on all the reading they've completed on Sparx Reader.

If a student's level has been manually overridden by their teacher, a lock symbol will appear next to their level. You can find more information about Sparx Reading Levels in this article: Key concepts of a Sparx Reader homework.

Gold Reader status

Within the Sparx level column, you are also able to see if the student has earned a Gold Reader pass by the gold star listed next to their level. Find out more about Gold Reader here.

Reading speed (Words Per Minute)

This column allows you to see how many words on average a student reads per minute.

Reading accuracy

Similarly to the Hand-in page, Accuracy allows you to see how well students have answered the comprehension questions presented to them in Sparx Reader on the first attempt. These are rated as Excellent, Good, Ok and Low. You can hover over the score to see the average percentage of questions students get right on the first time. This rating is based on all of a student's reading activity, not just the current week.

If a student doesn't have an Accuracy measure on the Insights page, it is most likely because they have not read enough on the site. This will appear as they do more reading and we get to know more about them.

Total SRP (Sparx Reading Points)

This column allows you to see the amount of SRP earnt by the student overall throughout their time on Sparx Reader.

Total words read

This column shows the number of words read by the student throughout their time using Sparx Reader.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't a student have an Accuracy rating?

If no Accuracy rating appears, the student likely hasn't completed enough reading on the platform. The rating will appear as they do more reading and the system learns about their performance.

How can I track progress over time?

The best way to measure progress is by having students retake the Sparx Reading Test (SRT) and comparing results from previous tests. You can find instructions for setting the SRT in the "Setting the SRT" article.
