Monitoring homework completion

Review students' homework completion progress via the hand-in page.

Updated today

The Hand-In page displays each student's progress on each week's homework. This can be used to see who has finished their work ahead of schedule and also any students who have not done their homework before the due date.

See homework completion insights for a class via the Hand-in Summary page

The Hand-in summary page provides an overview of completion for a homework, plus a variety of “shout-outs” to help you to praise and reward your students. This page is ideal for presenting on the board to students during lessons, encouraging those who’ve yet to get started, praising those who’ve made good progress and supporting those who need it.

Get a quick overview of current homework completion for all of your classes via the Dashboard

When you log in to your Sparx Reader site, you'll be taken to the Dashboard.

  • The 'Hand-in summary' section of the 'Teacher view' on the Dashboard shows how many student have completed, partially completed or not started their homework for every class that you're linked to in Class Manager.

  • See Steps to setting your first homework for information on how to link teachers for classes.

  • The 'Department view' on the Dashboard shows the same information, but for all classes in your school.

  • It also displays data on

    • staff who have completed their training

    • number of classes with homework set this week

    • number of classes who have had their Hand In page viewed

    • Useful updates

See live homework completion data via the Hand-in page

For your chosen class, the Hand-in page shows each student's homework completion progress for the current week and information that can help you to identify when students might be struggling, or due praise.

  • Access the Hand-in page from the main menu

  • Select the class in the left sidebar under 'All Classes'

  • The 'Homework Completion' bar shows their progress towards the weekly target

  • The 'Accuracy' column shows how well students are answering questions about their book

    • These are rated as Excellent, Good, Okay, Low and Very Low - you can hover over the rating to see the percentage of checks they passed on the first attempt

  • The 'Book' column shows which books the student has read while the homework was live

  • 'Activity' provides a link to view the student's reading activity in greater detail

  • 'Previous Homework' gives an overview of any previous outstanding homework

    • Students can backfill their completion from the last 6 homeworks by continuing to read after reaching their current target

Check for careful reading using the activity timeline

From the hand-in page, click 'View' in the Activity column to see a more detailed view of the student's reading activity during this homework week.

The banner at the top of the page gives an overview of the student's activity.

  • Click 'Show Books' to see a list of books the student has read during this homework (including details about the book's reading age and mature themes)

The Timeline breaks down the student's reading activity by each question check they attempted, including:

  • The SRP they were awarded

  • How many attempts they have had at a question check

  • How long they spent reading during each attempt, and if they were warned for reading too quickly.

You can use this information to look for:

Students skipping straight to the questions, or skimming the text

If a student has a low recorded time reading a section (and therefore a very high estimated reading speed on that section, this will result in them being warned that they have read too quickly, and will be expected to get all the questions correct to pass the check. The red exclamation in this view tells you the student received this warning:

By failing the check, the student will be awarded 0 SRP, and be expected to re-read the section before attempting the questions again. If they then answer all questions correctly, they will earn a reduced amount of SRP, so their homework will likely take them longer to complete.

Careful, meaningful reading

You can also use this page to call out great examples of careful, meaningful reading. In this example, a student is consistently passing their question checks first time, getting most or all questions correct. This results in them earning maximum available Sparx Reader points, and will mean their homework takes the expected amount of time.

Monitor reading in real time using the Live Monitoring page

The Live monitoring page allows you to monitor usage of Sparx Reader in real time. For example, this could be during a reading lesson.

You can select multiple classes by ticking the boxes in the left sidebar, and you can adjust the start time of the session to only include SRP earned since that time.

This page shows:

  • If a student is currently logged in and online.

  • The book they are currently reading.

  • How much SRP they have earned during the sesion.

  • Words read and how accurately they are passing their question checks.

Get updates about planned homework and students' homework progress via email

In Class Manager, you can link teachers to classes and enable teacher emails. See Steps to setting your first homework for more information on how to do this.

We will send emails to teachers who are assigned to a class, 2 working days before homework is due to be handed in.

This allows you to see:

  • how students are getting on

  • how many students have started and finished their homework

  • as well as additional praise information, such as how many students have achieved excellent reading accuracy this homework.

This email is only sent for classes that you’re assigned to and you will only receive one of this type of email per day, including any classes due in 2 working days time.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no accuracy rating showing?

If there is no accuracy rating showing, this means that the student has not completed any ebook reading while the homework was live. If they have earned SRP but do not have an accuracy rating, this means that either:

  • The student has earned SRP in Gold Reader instead

  • They earned the SRP after the due date and backfilled the completion

Why is a new student not appearing on the Hand-In page?

A student will only appear on the hand-in page if they were added to the class before the homework was set. If a student has recently been added to a class, they may not appear under the current homework, but they will be in the class list for the next homework.

Why is the information on my student's site different to the information on the Hand-In page?

If a student is showing you a screenshot of their homework that doesn't match what you're seeing on your Sparx site, it could be that they have edited the appearance of their homework using the Inspect Element tool available on most browsers.

  • Right clicking and selecting Inspect element will bring up an interface that allows the student to manipulate the visual styling of the page, including changing the colour of elements or editing text.

If this is the case, a refresh will revert everything back to normal, so ask them to do this in front of you to see if anything changes.

Don't worry - any changes that a student makes using inspect element will be purely cosmetic, and will not be saved. The Hand-In page will contain the most up to date information.
