What are Sparx Reader Points (SRP) and how do they work?

        Article Summary

        What are SRP?

SRP stands for Sparx Reader Points. Students will earn SRP as they read and pass their checks.

How does a student earn SRP?

At the end of each section they read, students will see a small number of questions or a 'check' to see how carefully they have read. If a student passes the check, they will earn some SRP.

To pass the check, the student needs to answer the majority of the questions correctly. (Depending on the number of questions they are shown they must get at least 3/4 correct or 4/5 correct.) If a student has read carefully, the questions should be easy to answer correctly.

The photo below shows what the students will see when they earn SRP:

If a student reads faster than we expect we present them with the image below to check if they are happy to proceed. When they click "Yes, ask me the questions" on the pop-up, they need to get 100% correct to pass the check, 3 out of 4 is not enough in this instance. The same is true if they have one attempt at the questions, get them wrong then try again.

If a student fails the check, they have a second chance

If a student fails the check, they will be sent back to re-read the section before doing the check again. If they pass on the second attempt, they can earn SRP but they will earn slightly fewer points than if they had passed on the first attempt. So, it is a good idea to remind your students to take their time and read carefully, as this is the best way to earn the maximum number of SRP.

If they fail the check for the second time, they can move to the next section of the book without earning any SRP. However, a student can't complete a book by getting all of the questions wrong.

Please be aware that when students have a Gold Reader pass, they will not be required to complete checks as part of reading their physical book. You can find more information about how Gold Reader works in this article: What is Gold Reader and how does it work?

You will set homework for your students with a target number of SRP

You will choose a target number of SRP for homework. It is useful to remember that SRP are personalised to each student's reading speed with 10 SRP being roughly equivalent to 1 minute of careful reading. So, if you set a homework task of 300 SRP, this equates to roughly 30 minutes of careful reading for all students in the class.

Remember 300 SRP does not always equate to 30 minutes of homework.
Although 300 SRP will be about 30 minutes of careful reading, it is very important to remember that this doesn't factor in the time taken to read and answer the questions at each check. In addition, if students do not pass their checks the first time and so have to re-read sections, their homework is likely to take longer than expected. For this reason, we would recommend always talking to students about SRP rather than how long they should spend reading.

As students earn points they will be shown their progress against the overall homework target. This example photo below shows the progress of a student who is working towards a 200 SRP target:

        Half-length/optional-only:
If there is a student in the class that you feel would benefit from having their SRP target amount reduced, you can set them to Half-length homework. More information on how to do this can be found in this article: Changing a student to half-length / optional only reading

Students can earn extra SRP in addition to their weekly target

        • If a student completes more reading than their weekly target they can earn extra SRP.
        • You can see any extra SRP that a student has earned each week on the Student Activity Report (see our Reports article).
        • If a student is consistently earning extra SRP, these points will go towards unlocking their Gold Reader pass. (See this article for more information: What is Gold Reader and how does it work?)
        • For students who are not Gold Readers, any additional SRP will fill up previous homework tasks first before being added as a surplus to the current week's total.
How do I see a student's total SRP?

A student's overall total SRP will include all SRP earned through weekly homework, any extra SRP and any SRP earned through Gold Reader. You can see a student's total SRP on the Insights Page

Students can backfill SRP for previous incomplete homeworks

When a student earns SRP in Sparx Reader, this will automatically go towards their current homework task. If the student has previous homeworks that they have not completed, any additional SRP earned on top of their current homework amount will backfill previous weeks. The points will backfill the most recent homework first. Student can backfill up to 6 previous homeworks.
